Introduction
Parbat is one of the seventy fifth districts of Nepal with a land of natural beauty, attraction of colourful cultures, traditions and people and picturesque scenery of the best walking place on the earth. The southern part of the district mainly covers by four village development committees which are Thana Maula, Bhangara, Phalam Khani, and Kurgha. Natives of these communities are mostly Gurungs and most of them migrated to Pokhara, Kathmandu, Hong Kong, UK and various parts of the world. With the time it is very necessary for the community to develop consistently socially, economically and religiously and conserve their tradition & culture as well. It is only possible by the establishment of society or a social organisation which could bind all these elements together in one fold and guide the new generation to preserve their identification and that is why Char Bhanjayang Tamu Samaj was born. How Char Bhanjyang Tamu Samaj was born?
It’s natural for everyman to migrate from one place to another in search of better living. During their migration period they cannot abandon their, tradition, culture, religion, and rituals, but with the passage of time if people are not aware of these factors & their identification, slowly the new generation tends to forget them, & eventually will get lost forever. To keep these elements consistent one has to play a major role and that’s why the social organisations are established. Before the era of 2046 there was a restriction for establishment of social organisations and associations in Nepal. After abolishing of Panchayat regime, people were more aware of their religion, tradition and culture and started seeking the lost ones. Even the Gurung ethnic groups were curious and started exploring their history, culture and religion. Whilst doing so they did encounter various challenges and conflicts of opinion among themselves. That is one of the reasons of mushrooming of societies/social organisation within the Gurung community. Mrs Til Kumari Ghale and Mrs Yuba Kumari Gurung both of them brought a proposal and an awareness in a social gathering to have an association which would help & guide all the people of the community in need. Taken these things into account the founder of CBTS,Mr Narayan Prasad Gurung, Lt (Retd) Narain Prasad Gurung BEM and Mr Om Prasad Gurung felt the need of the society for conservation of the culture and tradition and to bring all the Gurungs of their region together. These matters were discussed thoroughly in the residence of Mr Narayan Prasad Gurung, Jawalakhel-13 and ultimately it was decided to consider the Gurung communities of Thana Maula, Bhangara, Phalamkhani and Kurgha naming the organisation as Char Bhanjyang Tamu Samaj. This was founded in 1st Chaitra 2059. This step promoted and encouraged the people from that region who reside in Pokhara, Hong Kong and UK to form social organisation. Taken these things into account it was being advised by Professor Ganesh Bahadur Gurung and social worker Mr Sher Bahadur Gurung, that all the associations established from their community no matter where they are located should share the same name. That’s how the CBTS Kathmandu, Pokhara, Hong Kong and UK were formed. Why it was named Char Bhanjyang Tamu Samaj ?
Chhamethum hill which is located in the southern part of the Parbat district is surrounded by four major valleys. From the peak all the surroundings of Gurung villages can be viewed clearly and beautifully which brings ambience of peace and magic. On the southern part of the hill lies a beautiful Laame Deurali. It gives an impression that uprising hills of this valley is ready to be a best ally with the Ghante Deurali. Down below is Dadra Gurung village and across is Bhati’s Gurung houses which reflect the true colour, culture and tradition of Gurung. On the northern part of Ghante Deurali is Bayale hill which joins with the border of Char Bhanjyang. Down the valley are village communities of Bhangara and Majh Kateri which can be seen clearly from the peak of the hill. The fourth valley is Thana which is situated in lower foothill of Chhamethum. This valley is the junction of Khalte, Nepane, Salendhara, Dhapa, Kafal bot and lower Thana. These valleys also play an important role for the unification of the community in this region. Hence it helped to name an organisation as Char Bhanjyang Tamu Samaj. Gurung communities were being settled in Thanamaula, Bhangara, Dadra, and Laame approximately seventh generations ago as were told by our ancestors and some anthropologists. That is one of the very obvious reasons to share a same culture, tradition, rituals, and languages among these communities, and is also one of the main reasons to make decision to bring together to these communities while forming the organisation. During the Panchayat regime these four villages were governed by a single Pradhan Pancha (Head of a village development committee) from Gurung ethnic group for a long period of time which played one of the important roles to keep the organisation’s name as CBTS.The major objectives of CBTS are highlighted as follows:
° To conserve the tradition, culture, religion and language of the community consistently and give them a sustainable development throughout.
° To provide awareness to the members regarding the values of the community and association and to safe guard the root of the community.
° To abolish the anti-social and cultural activities and to give a remedy to the area of financial challenges by way of organising charity programmes.
° To form a new committee for youngsters with the motive of encouraging new generation to participate in every extracurricular activities organised by the association, which will help them to extract their talents.CBTS (UK) in brief
