Visit Char Bhanjyang 2015 – Medical Expedition
Visit Char Bhanjyang 2015 – Medical Expedition took place from 16-29 Nov 2015 in Char Bhanjyang Area (Thanamaula, Kurgha, Bhangara and Phalamkhani VDCs in Southern Parbat). The aims of the visit were to carry out medical camps, surveillance for future expansion of the clinic and promote tourism.
This multi aim project were sponsored by Char Bhanjyang Tamu Samaj UK (CBTSUK) and the Swinfen Charitable Trust (SCT). The expedition was led by the Chairman of CBTSUK Hon Lt Chandra Gurung and Medical Team was led by SCT’s senior consultant Prof Dr. JF Celin (cosmetic plastic surgery), Prof of Virginia University,USA with Dr Samad Tadjkarimi, (consultant cardio surgery) Royal Brompton and Harefield Hosp, Miss Deanna Faltrini (Senior Nurse Plymouth hospital) Mr Patrizio Patrizi (Journalist) and Executive Adviser of Char Bhanjyang Area Development Project (CBADP) Maj HJ Bardell MBE. The team from Char Bhanjyang included, Capt Deo Bdr Gurung (Regional Director Nepal), Mrs Shanti Gurung (CBTSUK Ama Group Chairperson), Mr Madan Gurung (Adviser CBTSUK), Mrs Sarita Gurung (Ambassador of CBTS), Mr. Missan Gurung (Youth Adviser CBTSUK).
During this visit the team paid official visit to Western Regional Hospital, Pokhara. They were briefed and toured around the hospital facilities by Dr Narendra Gurung (senior surgeon and Director of medical faulty Char Bhanjyang Centre for Health). They also visited District Hospital in Kushma and Sahid Gangalal Heart Hospital in Kathmandu.
Before proceeding to Char Bhanjyang Area the team were welcomed by the Chief District Office (CDO), Local Development Officer (LDO) and Chief District Medical Officer at Kusma who vowed to support Char Bhanjyang Area Development Project missions.
The expedition was quite tough in terms of getting into the village in time, organising administrative, logistic issues and medical check-up. The team carried out medical 2 days camps in Khalte, a day in Laame and Bhangara totalling 300 patients from the age of 5 months baby to 90 years old. People travel from long distance to be seen by the doctors. Our kind doctors never disappointed them and seen until late night. The camp discovered very serious health problems especially within the female patients who were immediately referred to Kathmandu and Pokhara for further treatment. Prof Dr Celin also gave vital health education to women which could save their lives.
During the camp a team paid visit to the recent earthquake effected area. It was so heart breaking to see these damaged houses which were in total devastation. The old citizens and young children are living in a temporary shelters for long time and government of Nepal doing so little about it. We have little fund to rebuild their houses but will try to give some help.
Our visit to schools who we providing funds are in good order. Yet there are other schools who need desperate financial support for furniture, rebuild from earthquake damage and new classroom.
Promoting tourism in our villages are the next priority to boost the local economy. It has high potential for tourism but we need to work hard. Char Bhanjyang tourism promotion documentary is ongoing project at the moment. We have plans for Char Bhanjyang Trail or circuit, guest houses, rebuild and preserve historical places, build local museums etc.
In order to support Char Bhanjyang Area Development Project, all members of Char Bhajyang around the globe need to unite. I am so please that my proposal to establish Char Bhanjyang International Coordinating Committee was whole heartedly accepted by all CBTS member and established CBTSICC under the Chairmanship of Capt Chandra Prasad Gurung.
In summary: These noble consultants did big sacrifice and went to help unfortunate people of Nepal at the time of India’s economic blockade on fuel, medical supplies and other essential commodities. They paid all travel, accommodation and other expenses by 4 x higher than normal rate, spending their valuable time and making lots of contributions. They saved many lives and boosted the moral of hopeless people in these remote parts. They came back with full satisfaction what they achieved. They want to go back again and do more for poor people. Perhaps this is the love and affection shown by the local people throughout Kathmandu, Pokhara, Khalte, Laame and Bhangara.
Some time I just wonder, why our friends from abroad feel so responsible for these people and not our Government and Politicians??? What a wonderful world…
