History of Char Bhanjyang Area Development Project
Over the years the servicemen and ex-service men of the British, Indian and Nepalese Army have contributed significant time, money and effort for the development of the villages within Char Bhanjyang. However a series of natural disasters in the 1990s coupled with the political unrest that began in early 2000s disrupted the normal life of these beautiful villages. The life in the village has been volatile. As a result most of the villagers migrated into the urban areas in search of a better life, greater opportunities and most importantly personal security. Those villagers who could not afford and did not wish to move remained in the village. In majority of cases they were poor and vulnerable.
Through the passage of time the political situation has much improved and it is reflected in the increased stability in the villages. Based on this fact the concept of Char Bhanjyang Area Development project was initiated by Hon Lt Chandra Bahadur Gurung. The main aim of the project is to assist those people who live in Char Bhanjyang in the field of Education, Health, Tourism, Agriculture, Nature conservation and Preservation of Culture
Why Support Char Bhanjyang Area Development Project?
Char Bhanjyang consist of four village development committees, namely Thanamaula, Bhangara, Phalamkhani and Kurgha VDC. These villages are situated in the remote part of Parbat in western part of Nepal. Once many soldiers of the British, Indian and Nepalese army were recruited from this area. Series of natural disasters and the political unrest that began in early 2000s disrupted the normal life of these beautiful villages. The life in the village has been volatile.
As a result most of the villagers migrated into the urban areas in search of a better life, greater opportunities and most importantly personal security. Those villagers who could not afford and did not wish to move remained in the village. In majority of cases they were poor and vulnerable.People of these villages are very poor and deprived of education. To go to nearest school, children have to walk at least 3 hours. The nearest hospital is 6 hours walk from the village. People die without getting basic medical care.
Despite their hard work throughout the year they do not have enough to feed them and their children. Never ending political situation has provided no governmental support and security.
So please help these unfortunate people. Your little support mean great help for them.
Char Bhanjyang Center for Health (Swinfen House)
Started in September 2011
Char Bhanjyang Center for Health (Swinfen House) was initiated by Hon Lt Chandra Bahadur Gurung through the good relationship with his British friends. Maj HJ Bardell MBE and Lt Col L Bardell played a significant role on this project.
Swinfen House:
The Lady Pat Swinfen MBE kindly inaugurated the Medical Clinic Project on 14 November 2011 with a special ceremony. The construction of Swinfen house started from September 2011 under the supervision of Capt Deo Bahadur Gurung,Ex. 6 GR (CBAD Project Regional Director, Nepal). The construction team consisted of Ex WO1 (RSM) Kul Bahadur Gurung Ex 2/2 GR, (Chairman/Site manager) and Mr Roshan Gurung (Assistant Site manager). The project is expected to be completed and fully operational by January 2013.
Fund for the project:
The Rt. Hon Roger and Lady Pat Swinfen MBE the Director and Co-director of Swinfen Charitable Trust UK (SCTUK) have kindly donated money for full construction of the medical clinic. Furthermore the Trust (SCTUK) assurances have been received for further financial and medical assistance towards this project for which each and every members of CBTS offer their humble appreciation towards SCTUK. Hon Lt Chandra Gurung raised an outstanding amount of money in support of Swinfen Charitable Trust by way of taking part in the London Marathon 2010. His efforts have been outstanding who raised more than £7,000. In the meantime Ms Sharon and Mrs Debbie Checksfield, Karen and Brien Everest, Lt Col Charlie Mayo and Allen Griggs ran the BUPA Great South Run 2011 and raised more than £3,600. Similarly 5 British friends and 11 youth runners for Char Bhanjyang UK ran BUPA Great South Run and raised more than £6,000 in support of the on-going projects undertaken by the Trust.
The Assistant Coordinator (UK ); Mr Hari prasad Gurung has been brilliant throughout these events providing technical support and helping hand to raise funds.
Ex Cpl Tek Bahadur Gurung’s kind generosity also provides an example of selfless contribution towards this noble cause, who has donated a house to this project: that will be very useful. We offer him and his family our heartfelt thanks, gratitude and Salaam. Furthermore 5 x local villagers have been so kind who have donated the land where the Clinic is now being built - a big thank you to them as well.
BUPA Great South Run 30 Oct 2011
FAB 5 (Sharon, Debbie Checksfield, Alan Griggs, Karen Everest, Lt Col Charlie Mayo) took part in BUPA Great South Run on 30 Oct 2011 to raise money for the Medical Clinic in Char Bhanjyang Area, Parbat Nepal. They raised £3,600. All Char Bhanjyang members are grateful for their kind support.
Breaside Preparatory School Annual Prize Giving
The Headmistress Mrs Karen Nicholson and Deputy Headmistress Debbie Checksfield of Breaside Preparatory School, Kent, kindly invited the Chairman of Char Bhanjyang Tamu Samaj UK Hon Lt Chandra Bahadur Gurung as a Guest of Honour at the Annual Prize giving ceremony. The Chairman was also accompanied by Mr Hari Prasad Gurung (Secretary). The Chairman and Secretary were also had an opportunity to give the power point presentation about Nepal, Char Bhanjyang, our Charity activities and the Gurkhas. Char Bhanjyang Tamu Samaj UK and staff of Breaside Prep School are working on to establishing link between these school.
Char Bhanjyang Centre for Health meetings
1st Char Bhanjyang Centre for Health Meeting took place at Chairman's House, London on 18 Feb 2011. Meeting was hosted by the Chairman of Char Bhanjyang Tamu Samaj UK Hon Lt Chandra Gurung. The meeting was attended by Rt. Hon Lord and Lady Swinfen, Ms Sharon Checksfild, Col Lynda Bardell, and CBTSUK Committee Members. The meeting concluded with the decision to build a Medical Clinic.
2nd Char Bhanjyang Centre for Health Meeting took place at Dene House in Canterbury on 2nd Apr 2011. The meeting was hosted by the Rt. Hon Lord and Lady Swinfen. The meeting was attended by the Chairman and members of CBTSUK Members. This was also an educational visit for Char Bhanjyang Committee members to learn the Telemedical system.
London Marathon 2010
Hon. Lt. Chandra Bdr. Gurung took part in London Marathon 2010 to raise money for the Swinfen Charitable Trust UK. London Marathon which has total distance of 26.2 miles is one of the major sport events in the World. He raised more than £7000 for the trust. This Charity run has bonded strong relationship with the trust to establish a medical clinic with "Telemedicine Link" in Char Bhanjyang area in Parbat, Nepal.
Janajyoti Higher Secondary School (10+2)
Hon Lt Chandra Gurung led the main fund raising activities in the UK and Sgt Jit in Nepal. In the meantime Ex Sgt Jit, Mr. Roshan, Mr Purna Bhandari (VDC Secretary), Mr Nil Giri and the Head teacher have played crucial roles whilst fulfilling this endeavour establishing Higher Secondary School. The main financial contributors were the members of Char Bhanjyang Tamu Samaj UK, Hong Kong, Kathmandu and Pokhara. In addition to the above 2 x Laptop computers, solar power system, significant amount of money and education materials were donated by Lt Col I Foxley, Maj H Bardell and Lt Col L Bardell. The School was officially opened by Lt Col I Foxley and the Chief District Officer on 22 October 2008. Currently, there are 54 students at 10+2. Within a very short span of it’s establishment it is recognised as one of the best schools in the district. With the advancement of technology, computer science has proved a very popular subject, attracting large number of students from the surrounding areas!
Domino’s Pizza building
This project was considered on the first visit to Khalte by Hon Lt Chandra Gurung, Lt Col Ian Foxley, Lt Col Peter Brown and Maj HJ Bardell MBE in 2002. After a long consultation with donors for the financial help, project stated in 2003.This was the first project that was completed in August 2004. The financial support for this project was kindly provided by the British donors. The main donors were Mr Stephen Hamsley (The Chairman, Domino’s Pizza UK and IRL) and Mr Chris Moore (CEO Domino’s Pizza UK and IRL) Lt Col Ian Foxley and Maj Hugh Bardell MBE played instrumental roles in raising significant funds. The overall project was coordinated by Maj Bardell MBE, sponsored by Ex. Sgt Jit Bahadur Gurung, assisted by Mr Narainsing , WO2 Bhadra bdr and Sgt Nanda psd Gurung.
